Kate Somerville | ExfoliKate

I bought this on recommendation from my friend who loved it and used it once a week. I’ve used it for a while now and here’s what I think!

First off, as always, here are the claims…

What it is:
A dual-action exfoliation method that seemingly smooths away years in as little as two minutes.

What it is formulated to do:

Kate Somerville ExfoliKate® Intensive Exfoliating Treatment is Kate’s top-selling product, and the next best thing to seeing Kate in the clinic. This signature, expert formula works both physically and enzymatically to deliver safe, dramatic results in one application—and in the comfort of your own home. It effectively combats acne and blackheads, reduces discoloration, and polishes skin for a smooth complexion. Ideal for all skin types except sensitive skin, it harnesses the power of fruit enzymes to clarify skin by removing dead cells and eliminating bacteria. Skin will appear healthy, youthful, and vibrant.

What I Think:

This stuff is AMAZING! It is crazy expensive but, to me, it’s worth it. A teeny tiny bit goes a LOOONG way. I have the 0.5 ounce tube and it’s lasted way longer than I expected!

This is the first scrub I’ve used that I can feel working. Regular scrubs feel good and your face feels clean on the surface but this leaves your skin feeling clean deep down in your pores! Your face feels so incredibly smooth and ready to suck up whatever serum or moisturizer you’re about to put on it. I don’t think I can even truly convey how much I love this stuff! Try it, you won’t regret it!

Ps. I have crazy sensitive skin and I can use this once a week with no irritation whatsoever.

Origins High Potency Night-A-Mins

It’s no secret I love Origins products. This is one of my favorites from the brand. I have the original version of the High Potency Night-A-Mins, not the oil free version. The 1.07 oz size retails for $41.

What Origins Claims:

Put dullness to rest. This night cream is fortified with a system of time-released resurfacers, minerals, moisture-rich replenishers, and vitamins C, E, and H to refresh and support naturally radiant morning skin. Relaxing aromas lull you to sleep and dry, dead layers slough away leaving skin looking bright and feeling refreshed.

What it really does:

I love this night cream, it’s so perfect for dry, winter skin. It has a light, subtle scent and is free of sulfates, phathalates, and parabens. It’s thick but not too thick. You really do wake up feeling refreshed and your skin feels so supple and moisturized but not at all greasy. I don’t know that it sloughs off dead skin but I do love the way my skin looks and feels when I use it.

If you have oily skin you might find this too much for you but if you have normal or dry skin I think you would love this!  Have you tried this? What did you think?

Dry Winter Hands Remedy

This time of year, if I’m not religiously moisturizing my hands, the winter can get the best of them. I try my best to moisturize every time I wash them but let’s be honest, it doesn’t always happen, and before you know it, your hands are dry and scaly. These are just a couple simple things you can do to get your hands back from the throws of winter skin.

First off, you need to exfoliate. I know this sounds like the last thing you would want to do to your poor, dry, irritated hands but trust me, you need to. If you don’t get that top layer of dry skin off, no matter how much moisturizer you put on top, it WILL NOT sink in. Now, you definitely don’t want to scrub harshly. Just lightly scrub your hands, rinse with lukewarm water, and pat them dry to prep them for the next step. A couple of my favorite hand/body scrubs are JR Watkins, Giovanni or even just some coconut oil and epsom salts mixed together would do the trick.

– You want to pick a gentle lotion and apply it generously. Because you exfoliated off the top layer of skin, it will sink in beautifully. I would probably even do two layers of lotion. Some of my favorites are Nature’s Gate, Crabtree & Evelyn, Aveda, and Nourish Organic.

– Finally, I like to apply a cuticle cream/oil to my nails and cuticles to lock in the moisture even more. I love Crabtree & Evelyn and Burt’s Bees.

Honest Organic Healing Balm

What’s the first step before you do any makeup? Skincare. It’s much easier to solve the problem than to cover it up. Have you ever tried to cover up dry skin on your face? It’s not pretty and actually slightly painful. If you have dry, irritated, sensitive skin, keep reading because you need this stuff in your life… I signed up for the Honest Company trial kit a couple months ago and got this as one of the samples. I used it once and was hooked!

Here’s my skin story…

I’ve had eczema since I was a baby but I had pretty much grown out of it until last winter when we had one of our coldest winters we’ve had in a while (mind you, this is south Louisiana so I’m sure I sound ridiculous if you live anywhere north of here) so my eczema reared its ugly head again. I went to see my dermatologist and she perscribed me a foam that retails for around $150 and it’s like an ounce. Of course, I only had to pay a copay but I couldn’t stomach the pharmaceutical company making that much money off of so little product so I filled the perscription once and set out to find my own solution.

I tried using plain coconut oil, shea butter lotion, and some Aveeno products and it was under control but it was the summer so it was heaven for my skin anyway.

About a couple months ago now, my skin started getting dry again. I had been using the Aveeno Eczema Therapy lotiion and I liked it well enough but some of the ingredients were (in my opinion) not great for irritated, sensitive skin so when I found this product that was fragrance free and had all natural ingredients I had HIGH hopes.

Here’s what The Honest Company says about the Balm:

  • Organic sunflower, olive, and coconut oils work with enriching shea butter to nourish, moisturize, and help protect sensitive and irritated skin.
  • Tamanu oil helps ease inflammation, promote healing, and restore and balance skin.
  • Chamomile and calendula gently calm, and soothe.
  • Beeswax battles existing diaper rash and prevents future cases by creating a protective barrier against urine.
  • No harsh chemicals (ever!) – only powerful, natural, non-toxic ingredients in this must-have salve
  • Sensitive for infants and everyday use
  • Hypoallergenic • Certified Organic • Vegetarian • Biodegradable • pH Balanced • Naturally Non-Toxic
  • Honestly free of petroleum, mineral oil, lanolin, gluten, parabens, phthalates, fragrances, dyes & most common allergens

My Thoughts:

It does ALL OF THIS. There is not one false claim in any of that. I go through my normal lotion routine after every shower and just add this on top of my problem spots. They stay moisturized and calm until I shower again, no need to reapply lotion throughout the day.

I have also used this stuff on my dry knuckles, dry lips, and around my eyes with no irritation whatsoever.  I am so happy The Honest Company has created such a solid product that I can use daily, knowing it is only helping my skin.

I’m in the process of reviewing some of their other products and can’t wait to share them with y’all!
